At check-in, we collect all health information necessary to meet each child’s needs. We have experienced medical professionals on site—ranging from licensed paramedics and registered nurses to physician assistants—who are present at camp and on the field trip.
Our team follows clear protocols and is well trained to respond to everything from minor scrapes and headaches to medical emergencies. In the event of any significant injury or illness, a parent or guardian will be contacted promptly, and we’ll work with you to determine the best next steps for your child’s care.
-
All food allergies and dietary needs are documented during registration and reviewed with our Head Chef and Health Manager. Because our kitchen is used to prepare all foods, we cannot guarantee an allergen-free environment, and there is always some risk of cross-contamination.
If your child has a severe food allergy, please note it clearly during registration and mention it again at check-in. You should expect a follow-up from our Health Manager and/or Head Chef so we can discuss your child’s needs and how we can best accommodate them.
All information about food allergies is kept confidential and is only shared with staff on a need-to-know basis to keep your child safe.
-
Most medications are stored securely and dispersed at scheduled times (typically at mealtimes or after campfire) by our on-site medic or designated health staff. During check-in, you’ll have the chance to review your child’s medications, schedule, and any specific instructions with us.

Yes. Campers do not need to know how to swim to participate in canoeing. Every child is properly fitted with a U.S. Coast Guard–approved life jacket and receives a safety talk and demonstration before going on the water. Each canoe is supervised by an adult staff member, and a significant portion of our staff are certified in lifeguarding and/or CPR/first aid through organizations such as the Red Cross and American Heart Association. Safety on the river is a top priority.
-
Campers are allowed to have their cell phones, the camp email is checked regularly and the camp phone is monitored by staff 24 hours a day.

Yes! We know what it’s like to be in their shoes. Camp is designed for all levels, from brand-new skaters to advanced. Our team of experienced skaters loves teaching fundamentals and helping campers progress at their own pace. We focus first on basic skills—like pushing, stopping, and turning safely—before exploring more advanced tricks. We often see beginners go from nervous to dropping in on ramps within a day or two, and our favorite moments are when something “clicks” and we can encourage them while they do their thing. The focus is always on fun, safety, and confidence, not pressure.
-
Absolutely. Whether your child dreams of being an Olympian or just loves to skate every day, Skate Camp Midwest is the place for them. Many campers arrive with years of experience. Our team of world-class skateboarders helps advanced skaters set personal goals, refine their style, and learn tricks they didn’t know they could do. We also offer opportunities to join friendly contests and jam sessions, while still staying fully connected to the larger camp community.

Times and activities may vary by day and session, but every day includes significant time on the board, time in nature, and time to connect with friends. A sample daily schedule can be found here:

What happens if it rains?
Skate Camp is a rain-or-shine experience. If the weather makes skating or outdoor activities unsafe, we shift to alternate programming—like indoor games, art and music sessions, workshops, or cabin activities—until it’s safe to be back outside. Safety always comes first, and we make sure campers are still having fun, even when the weather doesn’t cooperate. -
A sample packing list is available at the link below and covers the essentials. We will email you before camp if there are any updates or special items needed for your child’s session.
-
Extra spending money is optional, not required. All meals and basic snacks are provided. However, we recommend sending a small amount of spending money if your camper would like to buy snacks, beverages, or items such as skate gear.
-
Founded by Skate Campers themselves, Skate Wild is our partner program whose mission is to connect youth to the outdoors through skateboarding. Our expert Skate Wild instructors teach campers supervised outdoor and survival skills—like knife safety, how to build shelter, start a friction fire, purify water, and identify poisonous and edible plants—while fostering a deeper appreciation for the environment.
-
Art Shelf is our partner program focused on removing financial barriers to creativity, so vulnerable communities can access the tools they need to make art. They believe artistic expression is a fundamental human right and a powerful tool for healing, growth, and critical thinking.
-
Mindfulness Through Play is our partner program that teaches mindfulness, growth mindset, and emotional regulation through games and play in after-school programs and summer camps. Its founder is one of the top kendama players in the world and uses the toy as a tool for focus and learning.
